On the afternoon of Saturday, July 29th, GranVida Senior Living and Memory Care honored our veterans during a very special ceremony.

Over 100 residents, families, friends and neighbors enjoyed presentations from:

  • Our distinguished Capt. Douglas W. King, Chief Staff Officer from our local Naval Base Ventura County
  • Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24)
  • Fred Shaw, Mayor of Carpinteria
  • Full Color Guard 1st Memorial Honor Detail presentation by local retired veterans
  • Santa Barbara Sheriff Pipe & Drum Corps
  • The “Touching History” Veteran Memorabilia Museum including regalia and artifacts from several wars and 15 mannequins wearing uniforms
  • Live musical entertainment with classical pianist Fredrik Rosvall

Special recognition was given to our veterans Armand Schmitter (Army), Joseph McDonald (Marine), Richard Goodman (Navy), Felix Karpain (Air Force), Merrill Aronson (Merchant Marine) and their families.

In fact, GranVida resident Richard Goodman is a U.S. Navy veteran who served overseas from 1950 to 1954 and received both a Purple Heart Medal and a Bronze Star Medal. He said special events like the Veterans Appreciation Day ceremony really makes people feel “proud to be an American.”
